EMPOWERING WOMEN AND ENRICHING ENVIRONMENT

Menstrual health & hygiene

Menstrual hygiene and adequate knowledge of menarche play a crucial role in empowering girls, more so because the subject is shrouded in myths and taboos in the Indian society.

Women, particularly adolescent girls, remain ignorant of the scientific knowledge of menstruation and hygienic health practices. Their ignorance and lack of knowledge have often resulted in adverse health outcomes.

According to a National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16, about 57.6 percent of the Indian women use sanitary napkins and 62 percent women in the age group 15-24 years still rely on a cloth during periods. Among women who use cloth, 60% changed it only once a day. These practices could explain why 14% women reported menstrual infections.

To combat this Sahyog Foundation is working on the promotion of menstrual hygiene and breaking the myths associated with it. We conduct such sessions in various schools ,colleges and societies. In each of our sessions, we are accompanied by a gynaecologist to help us clear the doubts of women.

We not only educate them about the various options like sanitary pads, menstrual cups and make but also make it accessible to them. Regular sanitary pads are 90% plastic and chemicals like dioxin which are harmful to women health and the environment. So we promote eco-friendly, safe and hygienic sanitary pads.

Women Empowerment

The best way to empower a woman is by providing her employment and making her self-reliant.

We at Sahyog strongly believe in this statement and provide work opportunities to skilled underprivileged women. Employment makes women financially independent and confident. These qualities surely enrich the life of the woman and her family. So to do this we provide a market to the underprivileged women for their products. These women though skilled and hardworking, lack the understanding of business and marketing, so we bridge the gap between the consumer and these skilled women. This ensures that their products reach a larger audience and they get a fair price for their products. Through various events and work orders ,we encourage them to increase their business.

Women with stitching skills have been sewing cloth and jute bags which are now used across Aurangabad. Stalls of Sahyog Foundation at exhibitions and malls sell coasters, greeting cards and other decorative items made by them. Recently we brought about the collaboration of a self help group and CIIGMA hospital, so they could earn by making breakfast for the CIIGMA marathon. By giving women dignified, safe and regular work we try to improve their lives.

Eco products

We at Sahyog Foundation, not only research about things that are harmful to the environment but also provide affordable and easy solutions to the people.

Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, and these conditions in turn can lead to pollution of the environment and to outbreaks of vector-borne disease—that is, diseases spread by rodents and insects. The primary goal of solid waste management is reducing and eliminating adverse impacts of waste materials on human health and environment to support economic development and superior quality of life.

At Sahyog we promote composting and biogas generation and guide the interested parties in installation of technology and training. Composting is a method of decomposing organic solid wastes in the presence of air. The process involves decomposition of organic material into a humus-like material, known as compost, which is a good fertilizer for plants. For Composting we are associated with Stonesoup Compost which offers a wide range of composting solutions that suit everybody. We act as consultants for our clients provide detailed knowledge regarding types of waste, segregation of waste, government policies and rules and how the technology works. Biogas helps to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, such as LPG, petrol/diesel, coal and reduce our fossil carbon dioxide emissions. We get the biogas generation technology from ‘Vaayu’. ‘Vaayu’ is a biogas technology, which will convert the hidden energy in our food waste to Methane gas which can be used directly as a cooking and heating fuel.

We take various measures to curb the harmful effects of plastic on our environment. We promote plastic ban through newspapers articles and events. We conducted a plastic ban awareness event at the Maheshwari mandal, Aurangabad. To provide greener and cleaner alternatives to plastic we have launched our very own eco-store. Our eco store showcases many items of day to day and festive use like jute and cloth bags, cloth folders, bio-degradable sanitary pads, paper made coasters, natural clay Ganesh idols and diyas. Nirmalaya management is one of our most successful event, in which we collect the flowers discarded during the festive seasons and compost them.

Decentralized waste management

Creating and spreading awareness of segregation of solid waste and the ideal way of disposing it thereby ensuring the reduction in pollution and lessening of garbage.

We have been working on training people on managing their waste at source by reducing, reusing and recycling their waste and achieving 90% resource recovery.

At sahyog we work on different projects like

1.Awareness and training on solid waste management,

2. Nirmalya dan ( @ Ganesh Visarjan)

3.swacch abhiyan ( Cleanup drives)

4.Beautification of public places

Empowering kids

Childhood forms the foundation for the adults we create; so we believe it is very essential that all children are given the right love and care.

There is a lot of stigma around autistic and HIV infected kids. With one in 68 children being diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in India, early diagnosis, social acceptance of kids suffering from the neurological disorder and clearing misconceptions about the same is extremely important for social welfare.

We at Sahyog do our best to spend time with these kids, shower them with affection and burst myths about these diseases. We buy products made by these children and, showcase and sell them at various exhibitions. This not only increases their self-esteem but also shows them that they posses skills which are valuable to this world. We work with two autistic centers in Aurangabad– Aarambh, and Swayamsiddhi and try to bring in funds for them. To organize events at these centers we connect them with sponsors who can help them.

We conduct toy donation drives at orphanages like Balika Asharam, Aurangabad. Rather than giving these children treats we work towards making their living facilities better. When the power supply at the Balika Ashram was cut due to unpaid bills we paid the bill to restore the power. We are focused on doing our best to better the lives of these children.
